"Word What Does It Mean"
Psalm 119:114 (New International Version)
You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
“I have put my hope in your word” do you translate this or understand it to mean “I have put my hope in the Bible” Most think of the Bible as the “word” of God; what they do not understand and what I believe David knew from life experience is that God speaks to the individual, either through others or the written scripture. At the time of the writing of the Psalm the Psalms were not scripture, in some cultures it is not scripture, so how do we, now living 2500 years after the writing of the Psalm say “it is the word of God” and the “word” the Psalm was speaking of. Justifiable questions that an outsider could ask are “If you God is alive, why did He stop speaking? Did He tell you everything there is to know or all that He knows? Has he now ran out of things to say?” What separates the God of the Jews and Christians from any other god? If other gods do not or cannot speak and God does not or cannot speak then who cares? Elijah declared “Let the god who answers by fire be God” can we not say the same thing today? There is much clamor about religion, even among Christian groups, when asked “how do you know your God is?” the Christians go off in all kinds of directions that resemble the Prophets of Baal. If we would simply declare “Because He speaks” He would and would silence any god who tried to interfere.
